Marie-Pierre Langlamet, as part of her performance in Athens, will give a masterclass on 10 March 2023
Marie-Pierre Langlamet has been principal harpist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra since 1993, when she was appointed under Claudio Abbado.
Ms Langlamet was born in Grenoble, France. She received her first harp lessons at Nice Conservatory at the age of 8 from Elisabeth Fontan Binoche and gained international recognition from the age of 15, when she won the top prize at the Maria Korchinska competition in the UK. A year later, she won first prize at the Cité des Arts competition in Paris, and was only 17 when she was appointed first harpist of the Nice Opera Orchestra, a position she held until she left to continue her studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. The following year she won first prize at the “Concours International d’Exécution Musicale” in Geneva. At the age of 20 she was appointed assistant principal harpist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, where she worked under James Levine. During her five years there, she continued to win major prizes. She won first prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York City and in 1992, first prize at the International Harp Competition in Israel, then widely regarded as the most important competition for the instrument.
She has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Cinodel Duca Award from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2003. In 2009, she was decorated by the French Minister of Culture as Chevalier des Artset des Lettres and was awarded the Grand Prix Legrand Prix de la ville de Nice in 2011. Marie-Pierre has appeared as a soloist with some of the world’s leading conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Christian Thielemann, Paavo Järvi, Marek Janowski, Trevor Pinnock, Francois-Xavier Roth, with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Le Philharmonique de Radio-France, the Israel Philharmonic, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the BBC Manchester, the Orquesta Nacional de Espana, the Seoul Philharmonic. She teaches in Berlin at the Karajan Academy and at the HannsEisler Musikhochschule.
